Run by South Korean tech firm, Naver Labs, a large-scale robotics testbed, Naver 1784, had established ‘the world’s first’ Starbucks run entirely by robots, with more than 100 service machines fulfilling orders at the site.
The company recently released a video of robots operating the cafe at its HQ and serving drinks.
“The Starbucks on the second floor of 1784 is the world’s most unique Starbucks,” the company said in a statement.
“With more than 100 service robots called ‘Rookie’ delivering Starbucks drinks to meeting rooms and private seats, and various experiments with a dual-arm robot.”
Throughout the building, robots are connected to Naver’s cloud-based management system, ARC, which the company describes as a “collective brain” that offers real-time management of the machines.
“Technologies such as collision avoidance, predictive robot coordination and pathfinding algorithms have been developed and implemented,” Naver added.
“Robots rapidly moving up and down call to mind the transportation systems of futuristic cities depicted in sci-fi novels.”
The name “1784” represents both the site’s lot number address, 178-4, while also marking the advent of the first industrial revolution back in 1784.
