The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced nearly US$13m in funding under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to support small- and medium-sized manufacturers (SMMs) in adopting smart manufacturing technologies.
The funding, part of the US DOE’s State Manufacturing Leadership Program (SMLP), is designed to address barriers such as high upfront costs and lack of training that hinder SMMs from implementing advanced, data-driven tools.
Administered by the US DOE’s Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains (MESC), the programme aims to increase production efficiency, reduce energy use, and strengthen the resilience of US manufacturing.
Smart manufacturing involves the use of technologies such as artificial intelligence, automation and high-performance computing to modernise traditional manufacturing processes.
By enabling real-time monitoring and improved supply chain security, these technologies are expected to enhance productivity and competitiveness across the industrial sector.
The new funding marks the third round of SMLP grants, following US$50m allocated to the programme. Previous funding supported 17 projects in 15 US states, helping manufacturers access technical resources and implement smart manufacturing solutions.
With this latest round, states, territories, and state-funded universities and colleges can apply for funding to offer SMMs access to training, technical assistance, and financial support.
Eligible projects can receive up to US$2m over three years, provided they meet a cost-share requirement of 23.1%.
Awardees will gain access to support from CESMII, the Smart Manufacturing Institute, and other technical assistance networks, including the National Laboratories and Manufacturing USA institutes.
Applications are open until April 21, 2025.
