FedEx Corporation has officially launched a new, state-of-the-art automated sorting facility at its Memphis World Hub, enhancing the company’s global logistics network.
The 1.3 million ft² facility, which is fully operational, is designed to streamline package processing and improve delivery efficiency.
The facility spans four levels and incorporates advanced technology to support high-volume sorting operations. It is equipped with 11 miles of conveyor belts and a dedicated area for handling bulky or non-conveyable shipments.
Capable of sorting up to 56,000 packages per hour, the new facility significantly increases the Memphis World Hub’s sorting capacity, allowing FedEx to expedite delivery times for customers.

The upgrade is expected to improve overall sort times by processing more than half of the volume from the primary sort within the new building.
This will enable quicker transfer of packages to their final destination, especially important during peak shipping periods like the holiday season.
The Memphis World Hub, which serves as the central point of FedEx’s global operations, now features fully automated sorting processes aimed at enhancing reliability and speed.
Key technologies in the facility include six-sided scanning systems that capture size and barcode data for precise sorting, along with new weighing and dimensioning equipment. In addition, the facility is outfitted with 1,000 cameras to monitor package flow and ensure smooth operations.
The facility’s upgrades also include a new hub operations command centre, three times the size of its predecessor. This control centre oversees all operations at the Memphis World Hub, ensuring coordination and efficiency across the facility.
FedEx’s Memphis World Hub remains the largest sort facility in the company’s global network, employing 13,000 team members and spanning 940 acres. It features 171 aircraft gates and 84 miles of conveyor belts, with a total capacity to process up to 484,000 packages per hour. The latest upgrade is part of FedEx’s broader efforts to modernise its network and enhance its logistics capabilities.
Lisa Lisson, president, Air Operations, FedEx, said: “The Memphis World Hub is the heart of the FedEx global network, and this dynamic, new sort facility is equipped with the latest data-driven technology that enables us to strengthen our hub operations.”
