Velodyne Lidar has announced a multi-year agreement for the supply of lidar sensors to Boston Dynamics.
Boston Dynamics chose Velodyne’s sensors to provide perception and navigation capabilities for its mobile robots.
Velodyne’s lidar sensors are designed to support the safe and autonomous operation of mobile robots, without human intervention.
“Boston Dynamics robots provide advanced mobility, dexterity and intelligence that enable automation in unfamiliar and unpredictable settings,” said Laura Wrisley, senior vice president of worldwide sales at Velodyne.
“Equipped with Velodyne’s lidar sensors, their robots can autonomously navigate complex environments.
“They can safely avoid obstacles and find the fastest route to perform vital tasks in environments from manufacturing plants and construction sites to distribution centres and warehouses.”
The sensors reportedly offer real-time 3D perception data for localisation, mapping, object classification and object tracking.
These capabilities are in place to support autonomous mobile robots in a range of indoor and outdoor environments, including those with changing temperature, lighting and precipitation.
