Aecom, an infrastructure consulting firm, has announced a partnership with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and the city of White Bear Lake to establish a pilot for an automated shuttle service in the area.
The service has been named Bear Tracks and is intended for a one-year run across a one and a half mile route. It will reportedly be free and is designed to connect residents to local amenities.
The trial will involve parts of MnDOT’s Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) Strategic Plan, including more accessible transport options for elderly and disabled people and improved public awareness of automated driving technologies.

Aecom will act as Bear Tracks’ main contractor and AV technology supplier, providing program management, planning services, technology design, procurement support, program evaluation, technical expertise and operational services.
The Bear Tracks project will use a Navya Autonom Shuttle, which is an automated, 11 passenger, low-speed vehicle that is fully-electric with a ramp and other accessibility features.
According to Aecom, the shuttle will have a safety driver, who will act as an onboard attendant and includes a computer, GPS capabilities and sensor.
Internet of things (IoT) solutions developer Newtrax will oversee operation of the shuttle.
Other project partners reportedly include Ramsey County, University of Minnesota, White Bear Lake Area Schools, Minnesota State Transportation Center of Excellence, White Bear Area Chamber of Commerce and the local YMCA.
