Facing rapid growth, First Supply sought to transform its supply chain to handle an increasing variety of stock-keeping units (SKUs), better utilise space and reduce labour-intensive manual picking.
The adoption of Exotec’s Skypod System aims to boost productivity, optimise resources and enhance customer service.
The new Skypod system at First Supply’s facility will reportedly feature more than 43,000 storage bins, 36 robots, three picking stations and three induction workstations.
Designed for scalability, the system can expand storage capacity by 30% by adding more bins and robots, Exotec added.
Exotec’s Skypath smart conveying technology will support six packing stations and a sortation loop with 12 outbound lanes. This setup will streamline support for all branch locations in the Upper Midwest and facilitate direct-to-customer deliveries.
“As a 127-year-old, 5th generation company, we are committed to innovating daily work experiences for our employees,” said Katie Poehling Seymour, president and CEO of First Supply. “Our new distribution center exemplifies our focus on optimising inventory management through technology and refined procedures.”
First Supply’s implementation of the Skypod system aims to enhance efficiency and improve the workplace environment for its employees.
“Robotics allow us to store and retrieve items efficiently, helping us adapt swiftly to business demands,” Poehling Seymour added.
“Our future is bright, driven by human connections and innovation through partners like Exotec.”
“First Supply is among the first in their industry in the US to adopt cutting-edge robotics,” noted Stanislas Normand, managing director of Exotec, North America.
“This partnership sets a new industry standard for customer-centric supply chain operations.”
