LG Electronics has announced the launch of a trial delivery service that uses two self-driving robots at Mayfield Hotel in Seoul, South Korea.
The robots will deliver food and beverages to customers in the hotel’s outdoor terrace as well as bus tables.
The robots are autonomous carts equipped with lids that open upon arriving at a customer’s table. After finishing their meal, customers need only put their empty plates back into the cart and the robots will carry them back to the kitchen.
LG said it is planning to use the partnership with the Mayfield Hotel to learn more about the operation of robots at hotels before it expands further into the sector.
“The hotel and LG are working together to replace simple and routine tasks with robots, while having human employees focus on responding to other urgent needs of customers,” said LG in a statement.
LG is currently working with the Mayfield on a mobile robot that can pour drinks and take them to customers. The company eventually plans to offer a multi-tasking robot that can be integrated to any hotel’s operation, depending on its suitability.
Furthermore, LG said it is looking to develop the robot’s suitability for operation on university campuses, amusement parks, and apartment complexes.
