A new €20m (£17.11m) injection moulding manufacturing site fitted with automated systems has been opened in Evergem, near Ghent, Belgium by ABB.
The multinational company built the site to cater for demand for safe, intelligent and sustainable electrification solutions across Europe.
The facility, replacing a previous one acquired during ABB’s merger with GE Industrial Solutions in 2018, is set to produce power distribution enclosures vital for safeguarding electrical components in various industrial settings.
The emphasis on automation and digital technologies is apparent in the new plant’s design and aligns with ABB’s Mission to Zero initiative.
By incorporating ‘state-of-the-art’ injection moulding machines and automation solutions, alongside digital monitoring systems like ABB Ability Building Analyzer, the facility aims to continuously optimise energy efficiency.
Renewable energy sources and heat pumps are also integrated into the site, with ABB expecting these to support a substantial reduction in both energy consumption and CO2 emissions compared to previous sites.
“The Mission to Zero™ approach at Evergem is a significant example of our aim to enable a lower-carbon society and of our commitment to accelerating the transition to more sustainable manufacturing,” said Mike Mustapha, president of ABB Electrification’s Smart Buildings division.
“This advanced site is designed to fulfil future demand, not just current needs. Incorporating cutting-edge technologies and innovative processes that can optimise efficiency and productivity now and in years to come will provide a training ground and sustainability roadmap for our people and customers. We will continue to combine digital technologies with measures to reduce energy consumption and increase renewable energy sources at Evergem in 2024 and beyond.”
