Supply-chain partner Wincanton has introduced a solution from modular automation company VersaTile to improve the efficiency of order handling at a shared user fulfilment centre in Northampton.
VersaTile is a spin-off from robotics manufacturer Tharsus.
According to a company statement, the responsive technology utilises a 3D configuration to increase pick and presentation rates, which Wincanton has said both saves space and increases efficiencies.
VersaTile is an automated, modular system of moving tiles, which was developed to quickly bring goods to pickers within a warehouse.
Its implementation is hoped to deliver a fivefold increase in pick and presentation rates, facilitate order picking within minutes and deliver significant efficiency and productivity benefits for Wincanton customers.
The companies said that Wincanton’s site in Northampton is the first to use this technology, with the supply-chain firm building its own integration software to enable VersaTile to operate effectively with its existing systems.
Paul Durkin, chief customer and innovation Officer, Wincanton, said: “Wincanton is accelerating the adoption of cutting-edge technology for the benefit of its customers, and our exciting investment in this innovative tote-to-person picking solution from Versatile Automation will transform productivity and efficiency in our shared user e-fulfilment operations.”
One major motivation for Wincanton’s investment is improving its customers agility, with its own research recently finding that more than eight in 10 (83%) of UK retailers are planning to grow order volumes in the next three years.
However, almost nine in 10 (89%) expressed that increased orders would negatively impact their ability to successfully fulfil all orders.
Joni Rautavuori, chief executive, Versatile Automation, added: “Supply chains are under tremendous pressure to meet ever changing customer demands for shorter delivery times, higher flexibility and lower cost in a sustainable manner. VersaTile’s solution uses advanced technology to address these very challenges.
“Having Wincanton, a leading supply chain company in UK, as our first customer shows the credibility of VersaTile Automation’s technology and the trust in our experienced team behind it.”
