A tablet-controlled robot is being used to complete pre-line road markings as part of a A$1.05bn (£527m) road construction project in Perth, Australia.
To date, Tiny Surveyor – which is exclusively distributed in Australia by Position Partners – has completed 520km (323 miles) of road markings for the NorthLink project, including centre lines, edge lines, pedestrian paths, cycle paths and barrier lines.
The three-wheeled system uses a GNSS receiver to accurately drive the unit, which can work for up to eight hours on a single charge.
The robot operates after the user has uploaded design files for pre-marking locations and can be controlled via a tablet from a car or another safe location.
Karl O’Toole, product application specialist at Position Partners, said: “Essentially the robot eliminates human error. As long as the correct design is loaded in, it will mark out every point accurately the first time.
“You can get up to 100 metres away from it before it will automatically stop until you’re back in safe working range.
Tiny Surveyor can also be used in a number of environments, including on gravel, sand and grass.
“For big or small projects, Tiny Surveyor is reducing costs for traffic management, increasing productivity and simplifying a straining manual job,” added O’Toole.
