Industrial robot manufacturer Kuka will harness Nokia 5G campus network in its German smart production development centre.
Kuka is preparing to use the 5G systems in its smart robotics and automation products, developed at the Augsburg facility with immediate effect.
Michael Wagner, director R&D, competence centre control technology, Kuka, said: “In coming years, Kuka will develop solutions that harness the potential of 5G’s fast, reliable and secure connectivity.
“By partnering with Nokia for private wireless networking, we have now established a long-term development roadmap that will allow us to capitalise on the new capabilities in future 5G releases for our automation solutions.”
By using a 5G campus network, Kuka said it ensures that the potential of the coming 5G development stages, 3GPP releases 16 and 17, can be optimally used.
Furthermore, the Nokia DAC manager portal will allow the network to be configured according to Kuka’s own specific requirements.
As part of a multi-year contract, Nokia will also support the robot manufacturer with network implementation and the operation of the systems. Training courses are also planned, enabling Kuka to develop new applications. This also includes the integration of new 5G-based interfaces and components for the Kuka automation and robot portfolio.
