Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and project management service Entec Si have collaborated to introduce a new surgical robot at Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.
Following approval of the project’s business case, Entec Si was then commissioned to lead the implementation of the robot.
Its responsibilities included coordinating the build, recruitment and training, finances, clinical operations and communication efforts, as well as digital support for installation.
The robots’ intended operating theatre is now complete.
Surgeons will use the Da Vinci surgical system to perform urology procedures on prostate cancer patients.
Robot-assisted surgery can be less invasive, so this change is intended to improve patient experience, encourage shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery times.
The refurbishment work included renovating and reinforcing the theatre floor to support the weight of the new robot, as well as upgrading the ventilation system to cater for its additional functionality.
Steve Goodyear MD FRCS, divisional director of surgery at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “Entec Si has been invaluable in the delivery of this project, helping us to demonstrate our commitment to providing the best experience for our patients.
“The successful delivery of the project will not only mean better care for patients but also help to make the trust an even more attractive place to work and train clinical staff across a wide range of specialities.”
Senior clinicians plan to start providing robot-assisted surgery at the hospital later this year.
