Steps Rehabilitation facility in Sheffield is investing in robotic and virtual reality technology to help people recovering from complex trauma injuries.
The centre, which offers intensive rehabilitation for people recovering from brain injury, spinal cord injury and strokes, has installed robotic solutions and VR to its residential setting.
It is the first facility in the UK to feature RehabHub, developed by Singapore-based manufacturer Fourier Intelligence, this platform provides upper and lower limb robotic equipment for balance and coordination restoration.
The suite of rehab technology can also provide cognitive feedback and be used for training, as it features cycle motion, arm, wrist, finger, and ankle rehabilitation robotics.
Furthermore, Step is an assessment centre for ReWalk, ExoAtlet II and ReStore exoskeletons.
Steps Rehabilitation clinical director Toria Chan, said: “These amazing pieces of kit used together provide a portable intelligent solution for therapy, supporting the functional rehabilitation of the upper limb, fine motor skills of the fingers, hand-eye coordination and cognitive ability.
“They allow clients to undertake training using everyday objects with the assistance of a lightweight robotic glove, with quantifiable data being recorded in real time enhancing the rehabilitation process. We can’t wait to see the results.”
Furthermore, Steps is in discussion with the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University to undertake new research that will further study rehabilitation technology.
