With only one week to go until Robotics & Innovation Conference 2021, Robotics & Innovation meets speaker Rav Chunilal, head of robotics and Artificial Intelligence at Sellafield, who will discuss robotics for hazardous environments.
Taking place on 23 – 24 June 2021 via virtual conferencing platform Swapcard, Robotics & Innovation Conference provides unrivalled, insightful, exclusive case studies and thought-provoking debate on current trends, technologies and future challenges.
This two-day online event will see a truly international range of perspectives on the use of robotics and associated innovation technologies via insightful presentations.
Name: Rav Chunilal
Job title: Head of robotics and Artificial Intelligence
Organisation: Sellafield
What is the best thing about your job?
I get to work with bright and enthusiastic people who share the same vision and are passionate about innovating new ideas and developing them into practical solutions. I have a dedicated team who build on ideas and bring them to life. Everyday is a learning day. We are creating a collaborative family within the nuclear sector in West Cumbria in the world of Robotics and AI to help us drive our mission – the clean up and decommissioning of the largest nuclear site in the UK. Our goal is to make a difference – creating a clean and safe environment for future generations.
How will robotics impact your sector most in 2021?
We’ve recently launched a new facility in West Cumbria – RAICo One – a space to allow a cross section of industries to collaborate under one roof. Using robotics and AI is a huge opportunity not just at Sellafield, but across many other nuclear sites. Developing and implementing standard system architecture for robotics is being initiated. Collaborative projects between NDA, UKAEA and TEPCO – LongOps will be initiated. Use of UAVs to collect crucial information in a simpler fashion becoming business as usual. Opportunities for in-situ decommissioning of nuclear cells being elevated to the next level.
What’s your best piece of advice to a professional in your field looking to invest in or deploy/implement a robotics solution?
Think about how they can improve how we approach decommissioning in a pragmatic manner, is it realistic and deployable, and more crucially – is it going to add value. A solution doesn’t need to be complex to be great.
Why are you looking forward to speaking at Robotics & Innovation Conference 2021?
We are innovating in the field of robotics and are looking to continue innovating. We want organisations and individuals from other sectors to come and join. We want to share our learning and help develop the UK’s national robotics expertise. A great opportunity to share some of the challenges we’re facing in some of the world’s most extreme environments and attract outside the box thinkers to get involved.
At the conference you’ll also be able to hear from NHS England Three, Sellafield, UK Space Agency… and more! You can view the full agenda here. All sessions will be available on-demand.
