Name: Jay Newton
Job role: Head of stations engineering and operations
Organisation: HS1
What is the best thing about your job?
The thing that makes my position special at HS1 is that I am able to be involved in all aspects of the business in both engineering and operations not just at one level, having detailed involvement in strategy and delivery, being part of a great company and having a great partnership relationship with our main supplier. It is the complete package.
How will robotics impact your sector most in 2021?
Robots and Robotics will have a greater impact as more companies within our sector see that change is possible even in previously unrecognised delivery areas such as train stations. Developing standards, procedures and processes that can be recognised within an industry allows the industry to move forward. There always needs to be something or someone that makes the step plus people are beginning to understand the real benefits from AI/IOT in the public operating environment.
What’s your best piece of advice to a professional in your field looking to invest in or deploy/implement a robotics solution?
Find a simple process that allows you to understand clearly your problem/need/requirement. Invest in time looking at existing solutions being used currently across different sectors or industry. If none found then connect with agencies such as Innovate-UK or Connected places catapult that can help connect you to SME’s who have differing TRL’s (Technology Readiness Level) to suit all requirements.
Why are you looking forward to speaking at Robotics & Innovation Conference 2021?
To develop relationships and learn from others what is being done across other sectors.
At the conference you’ll also be able to hear from NHS England Three, Sellafield, UK Space Agency… and more! You can view the full agenda here. All sessions will be available on-demand.
