Name: Allan Gibson
Job title: Director Of advanced robotics & automation
Organisation: The Estée Lauder Companies
What is the best thing about your job?
The best thing about my job is being able to reimagine our operations as I keep 1 foot in our innovation organisation while at the same time keeping responsibility for the actual implementation of the work that the team delivers.
How will robotics impact your sector most in 2021?
I think robotics will impact the manufacturing sector most though its use in agile equipment. A major portion of manufacturing remains untouched by automation due to the high degree of variability that those industries possess. With new advancements in ease-of-use programming and vision guidance many of these historic walls are being removed. This is all occurring at the same time that major markets are continuing to demand a higher degree of personalisation when it comes to the products that they buy.
What’s your best piece of advice to a professional in your field looking to invest in or deploy/implement a robotics solution?
Understand your process in as much detail as possible. Robotics have a sense of allure but in reality what sets the difference between a well-executed robotics project and a poorly-executed one often times has nothing to do with robotics itself. The best teams in manufacturing robotics are the ones that spend a high percentage of their time understanding the process before beginning to look at what technology is best to solve the problem.
Why are you looking forward to speaking at Robotics & Innovation Conference 2021?
I’ve always enjoyed sharing my perspective on automation, and robotics. There is a lot of marketing and innovation occurring and I like to connect with end-users to provide a degree of hands on testimony to support and sometimes debunk their claims. Conferences like the Robotics & Innovation Conference help me fulfil that mission.
At the conference you’ll also be able to hear from NHS England Three, Sellafield, UK Space Agency… and more! You can view the full agenda here. All sessions will be available on-demand.
