Vueron Technology, a Korean-based start-up developing autonomous vehicles (AVs) and light detection and ranging (lidar) solutions, has announced plans to launch a delivery service using self-driving trucks.
What’s more, the business will be in partnership with Teamfresh, a Korean logistics company that specialises in the delivery of fresh produce.
Veuron has said that it believes the new self-driving delivery service will address two main issues facing the logistics industry: high costs and labour shortages.
Currently, the AV technology firm provides ‘VueOne’, an automotive lidar solution, and ‘VueTwo’, a smart infrastructure lidar solution that leverages its self-developed perception algorithms.
Earlier this year, the company obtained a permit to operate a lidar-only AV in California and Nevada, both of which represent competitive markets for this type of technology. This led to a road test which saw a Vueron vehicle drive 383 miles (616km) from Los Angeles to San Francisco.
The launch of this delivery service aligns with the company’s plans to expand into different markets in the future, which includes ambitions to develop solutions for the cosmetics and liquor industries.
Veuron claims that its self-driving systems have previously been tested on cars along the roads of both Seoul and San Francisco, but that the company intends to reveal its autonomous trucks to the world with a live demonstration during the first week of January 2023.
