An automated brick laying robot (ABLR) has been deployed to help build a three-bedroom house in Everingham, in what’s been described as first in the UK.
Work on the house began on 28 September 2020 and is expected to take three weeks. Once completed, a farm manager will move into the property.
Developed over a four-year period by Construction Automation, based in Pocklington, Yorkshire, the ABLR can lay bricks, blocks and mortar and read digital plans of a house or brick-based building.
According to the company, the patent-pending robotic system uses standard mortar and any brick type. It lays the bricks around a track to construct the building with only two workers required to operate the machine.
The ABLR is controlled via tablet and can read directly from architects’ drawings. It sits on a 9m-high vertical frame, which the company said removes the need for scaffolding and therefore people working at height.
Workers are still required to load bricks and mortar into the robot as well as continuing with tasks such as pointing and damp-proofing courses.
