Robot manufacturer Universal Robots recently unveiled its latest model of cobot, the UR20.
The company has said the UR20 represents 17 years of technical evolution and greatly expands automation opportunities, such as the ability to reach further into machines, tend several machines in the same cycle and handle 25% heavier parts.
It reportedly has a 1,750mm (68.9in) reach and 20kg (44.1lbs) payload and, despite being UR’s heaviest robot, the UR20 is reportedly the lightest in its class, weighing only 64kg (141.1lbs). Universal Robots suggests this makes it both a versatile technical tool and a manual labourer.

“We have completely re-engineered the cobot’s field-serviceable joints, that deliver 30% more speed and torque within a closed capsule,” said Anders Beck, VP of innovation and strategy at Universal Robots, when explaining how the UR20’s base joint produces 700 Newton-metres of torque.
“This is more than a performance model Tesla produces on all of its wheels.
“Even with the increase in reach and torque, we’ve managed to retain the cobot’s 50 microns repeatability, while still using standard single-phase power.”
Universal Robots claims to have kept the intuitive user interface but added software enhancements to give users improved motion control capabilities.
