US robotics startup Nuro is deploying autonomous vehicles to deliver prescriptions for CVS Pharmacy across three zip codes in Houston, Texas.
Customers in the pilot area can place prescription orders along with non-prescription items on the CVS website or app.
If the autonomous delivery option is selected, one of Nuro’s Toyota Priuses will deliver the order to the curbside at the customers address within three hours.
Customers will need to confirm their identity to unlock the delivery when the autonomous vehicle arrives at the curbside.
“We are seeing an increased demand for prescription delivery,” said Ryan Rumbarger, senior vice president of store operations, CVS Health.
“We want to give our customers more choice in how they can quickly access the medications they need when it’s not convenient for them to visit one of our pharmacy locations.”
Priuses will be used in the pilot stage before Nuro’s custom-built R2 delivery robot is introduced.
“We are excited to expand into an entirely new vertical: health,” said Dave Ferguson, Nuro’s co-founder and president.
“Through our partnership with CVS, we hope to make it easier for customers to get medicine, prescriptions, and the other things they need delivered directly to their homes.”
