Hyundai Motor Group’s driverless technology company, Motional, has partnered with public mobility service Via for an on-demand shared robotaxi platform.
The partnership aims to use research to inform how driverless vehicles can be integrated into mass transit networks and be optimised for pooled rides.
By combining Motional’s self-driving vehicles with Via’s booking, routing and fleet management technology, the partnership aims to develop an integrated and autonomous shared-ride system that expands access to safe, affordable, and efficient transportation options.
The two companies will also create a rider app featuring public transit information to encourage connections to local transit hubs.
Daniel Ramot, Via CEO, said: “We are excited to partner with Motional to make autonomous shared ride programs an affordable and efficient transportation alternative to the private vehicle.
“By combining groundbreaking on-demand mobility solutions with best-in-class technology for self-driving vehicles, we are creating new and necessary transit options for communities around the globe.”
The partnership’s first shared robotaxi ride service is expected to be available to the public in one of Motional’s existing US markets in the first half of next year.
In response to Covid-19 concerns, the companies said they are working closely on protective measures including PPE, partitions, frequent sanitising and contract tracing.
Karl Iagnemma, president of Motional, said: “This partnership comes at an especially significant moment, as Covid reshapes our views on transportation and consumers demand more, flexible, and varied options.”
“We’re thrilled to partner with Via and jointly lay the foundations for self-driving shared rides. This is another step towards driverless technology reaching its full potential.”
