UPS Supply Chain Solutions is piloting autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) in several of its facilities as part of ongoing efforts to modernise warehouse operations by leveraging autonomous capabilities.
The Locus Robotics AMRs receive instruction from a new warehouse network technology created by UPS and supply chain solutions provider Softeon – the Warehouse Execution System (WES) – to pick up and transport goods for order consolidation and pack out by UPS employees.
The system dynamically dispatches order fulfilment activity and continuously balances inventory flow, which allows UPS engineers and operators to efficiently synchronise the use of labour and equipment.
“Our investments in technology support operational improvements that enable UPS to improve service for our customers,” said Philippe Gilbert, president of Supply Chain Solutions
“The WES, AMRs, and other technologies allow us to create more customised solutions that better serve customers and improve the end-user experience.”
Other investments by UPS in warehouse technology include AGVs, automated sorting systems, and other automation technologies.
