Jaguar Land Rover has added a new “colleague” to its team, in the form of a robot quadruped, to guard its EV testing facility in Coventry and to spot operational issues.
The robot dog from Boston Dynamics, fittingly called called Rover, has its own kennel at the plant where it periodically spends time and charges its 50V battery between shifts.
It has the ability to operate 24/7 which saves employees time and allows them to focus on other tasks.

The robot is fully automated, which allows it to follow a range of pre-set routes, and uses AI to physically open doors, climb stairs, and navigate high-traffic areas.
It continuously takes measurements and inspects valves and machinery, eliminating the risk of human error, while allowing engineers to analyse its results to make better maintenance predictions or to perform repairs.
Additionally, the robot is equipped with sensors that allow it to identify potential gas leaks, and it uses thermal sensors to evaluate battery temperatures, ensuring technicians can continue their work safely.
Gonzalo Ejarque-Rinaldini, PhD automation and robotics at JLR, said: “Key to JLR’s Reimagine strategy is a continual collaboration with the industry’s brightest minds, developing advanced robotics solutions that work in harmony with our employees for the uncompromising benefit of our clients.”
Innovations and achievements in inspection robotics will be highlighted and celebrated at the second annual Robotics & Automation Awards on 06 November 2024 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.
