Riyadh’s long-awaited metro project has reached a significant milestone with the launch of its Blue and Red lines, after Siemens Mobility supplied 67 of its Inspirio automated trains.
The initiative was supported by the BACS consortium which includes Bechtel, Almabani General Contractors, Consolidated Contractors Company, and Siemens Mobility.
These two lines, spanning 64 kilometres, are now equipped with 67 fully automated, driverless metro trains. The Blue Line began passenger service on 01 December, with the Red Line set to follow on 15 December.
The Riyadh Metro is part of a broader effort to modernise the city’s transport infrastructure, which also includes an extensive bus network. When completed, the metro system will consist of six lines covering a total of 176 kilometres, capable of serving up to 3.6 million passengers daily.
The system is designed to address growing transportation demands as the city prepares for major global events, including the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, World Expo 2030, and the 2034 Asian Games.
The train network features a high-performance communications-based train control (CBTC) system to ensure efficient and safe operations. The system’s design accounts for the region’s harsh climate, with enhanced air conditioning and special filters to prevent sand ingress.
This major infrastructure project is seen as a key part of Saudi Arabia’s vision for sustainable urban development and mobility.
Additionally, Siemens Mobility has played a pivotal role in the electrification of the Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro line.
