Huawei is making a significant investment in the Chinese robotics sector as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities.
The tech giant has committed US$413 million (3 billion yuan) to Dongguan Jimu Machinery, a company specialising in electronics components and technical research.
According to Qichacha, a Chinese corporate database, this new investment follows Huawei’s earlier involvement with Jimu Machinery. In 2023, Huawei registered a capital contribution of 870 million yuan (US$121 million) in the company, with both firms engaged in activities such as engineering research, technology transfer, and technical exchanges. Notably, Huawei is reported to wholly own Jimu Machinery.
The move marks a strategic shift for Huawei, signalling a broader push into the robotics industry. While the company has been expanding its presence in sectors like smartphones and electric vehicles (EVs), the latest investment points to its growing interest in the rapidly evolving robotics field in China.
Huawei’s AI initiatives have been expanding in recent months. The company recently launched an AI cenre in Shenzhen aimed at accelerating the development and application of AI technologies in robotics.
The centre focuses on computing power and the manufacturing of AI tech, with notable collaborations with Leju Robot and Han’s Robot to further its ambitions in the robotics space.
Additionally, Huawei has been working with robotics companies like Dataa Robotics, which uses Huawei’s Ascend AI computing services to develop large models and new robotics applications. Leju Robot integrated Huawei’s Pangu LLM (Large Language Model) into its first robot in 2023, showcasing the company’s growing role in the integration of AI in robotic systems.
